Kong: Skull Island Trailer 2 is For Your Health

I can already see the Batman v. Superman style problem Warner Bros. stablemate Legendary Pictures is going to have to grapple with before Godzilla vs. Kong out on May 29th, 2020, a problem hinted at in this trailer, which suggests why two ideologically passive monsters, would seek out and fight one another.

“Kong’s a pretty good king. He keeps to himself mostly.” Mutters Academy Award nominated song and dance man John C. Reilly, channeling his Dr. Steve Brule character on adult swim’s “Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!” right down to the lettering on his jacket.

"...for your health!"

“…for your health!”

It’s an interesting pivot from the first trailer which was a lot slicker more serious if a comparably contemporary cut for action blockbuster flicks. This one seems slightly lighter, more offbeat and peculiar. I mean that in the best way, because it leaves more of an impression.

The director Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer) follows in the Hollywood trend of indie directors immediately helming blockbuster tentpoles (Marc Webb, Jon Watts, Colin Trevorrow) for reasons presumably related to cost (paid less than a heavy hitter), and creative control (a little creative injection but is likely more docile, give or take a Josh Trank). The film is written by standby Hollywood touch up ghost writer Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler) with Godzilla and on-brand scribe Max Borenstein based on a concept by oscar nominated screenwriter John Gatins. Hopefully they sort out the creative differences and lesson learning of franchise table setting that Chris Terrio failed for an earlier event picture this year.

Also starring Academy Award Winner Brie Larson, character actors galore John Goodman (10 Cloverfield Lane), the internet friendly Samuel L. Jackson (everything), and human tumblr Tom Hiddleston (Thor’s Loki), Kong Skull Island heads out on March 10th, 2017.
